Here Comes The Sun

My mind is whirring with images of Bali, I've looked at so many travel guides my brains having a bit of a melt down.

As I stated in my introduction post, our Honeymoon is going to be on the island of Bali, a province of Indonesia. Bali has the biggest Hindu Population of anywhere on the globe.
Our flight will take 14 hours, and we will leave Wales far behind us for a much needed 16 day rest.

Although leaving Socks (my cat) for 16 days pains me, I know she'll be in good hands.

I've been trying to plan our excursions and look at cool places to visit, whilst on our trip.
We have 3 hotels booked in 3 different areas of the Island, so we'll have plenty of places to experience.

To plan your own honeymoon, or holiday in general; first things first, look at the foreign travel advice from your local government website. I skim read passed most of the scary propaganda...nearly everywhere is having terrorist attacks now a days.
BUT I did read the super important information on National Disasters
Bali has 2 volcanoes, both of which have been recently active. Knowing the evacuation zones means that when I'm planning my trip I know what areas are off the list.
It's also good to read into Local Laws And Customs, to protect yourself from dishonouring their culture, and ending up in dangerous situations.

Next thing I looked up was transport.
Transfers to and from our hotels are covered in our holiday package, but travelling around will require the use of public transport, taxi services, and bike hire.
Finding the hot spots for bike hires near my hotels, aswell as finding the reputable taxi companies was priority, to make sure we can actually get to the excursions I've been planning.

I often find it preferable to book 3 or 4 excursions through your travel agent. They can usually get a slightly discounted rate, that more importantly is non-disputable, but they also come with a guarantee for the trip to take place.

HOWEVER, TUI doesn't have any excusrsions in Bali listed yet, which means it's down to me. And whilst it's a little overwhelming, I'm finding some amazing hidden gems.

Like this beautiful abandoned theme park,
Taman Festival.

Supposedly haunted according to natives, a true ghost town, covered in immensely beautiful art and statues. With possibly a crocodile or two around!

IT also meant that I could be a truly concious traveller. Matt was desperate to see Elephants, but there is not a single Elephant Sanctuary in Bali... they all still offer Elephant rides, and have very questionable, deplorable conditions to live in, chained up like a rack of bikes.

So anything with animals involved, we really have to do our research before going.
I found;
The Serangan Shark Project

When local fisherman catch baby sharks, rather than selling them to a fish market for food, they sell them to The Serangan Shark Project instead. This conservation organisation, houses the baby sharks in a sea nursery, until they are adolescents, and big enough to return to the wild, free of danger from fishermen.
You never really know until you arrive, but it sounds like it's going to be a really ethical excursion to go visit these baby sharks in the nursery.

The list of places I've found is endless, and I already have enough to fill this holiday and the next.
But top tip from anyone you speak to is to leave a few excursion days free, so you can listen to the locals, and hotel representatives as to what is a really good experience.

  • Hunt for those oddities, and the unknown.
  • Make sure you see the unforgettable tourist attractions...yes they'll be busy, but they're popular for a reason.
  • Listen to the locals, what are there favourites?
  • Pre-Plan
  • Track the distances from your hotel

Happy Hunting :)
